National Zoological Park (Delhi Zoo)

National Zoological Park is a part of a 176 acre zoo near the Old Fort in Delhi, India. The 16th Century citadel is a sprawling green island and has a great collection of animals and birds. The visitors are not permitted to bring any kind of food than drinking water with the visitors and animals are kept safely at zoo. The Delhi zoo was conceptualized after New Delhi was built and to be precise it got inaugurated in 1959. The park authorities initially took to conservation and the breeding programme and the Central Zoo Authority for Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros along with Swamp deer, red jungle fowl and Asiatic Lion with brow antlered deer.

The National Zoological Park is known for one gory incident when in 2014, a man named Maqsood fell in white tiger’s moat accidentally and the white tiger mauled the man after getting enraged by crowd.The various animals include Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Spider Monkey, African Wild Buffalo, Giraffees along with many other mamals.

Delhi zoo was established in 1959 and since then, has been a centre of attraction for nature lovers from all parts of the world. Located between Humayun’s Tomb and Purana Qila, the sprawling zoo houses over 1347 animals including reptiles, birds and mammals brought in from different continents. The zoo has done a great job of providing excellent living conditions for animals.

Delhi zoo (chidiya ghar) presents a lot of rare and unique wildlife. You can watch the white albino tiger couple, leopard cars, hippos, rhinos, black bucks, Indian gazelles, spider monkeys, jaguars, African wild buffalos, zebras, hundreds of deer, and an Indian elephant that loves music and plays harmonica. The zoo also houses endangered species and migratory birds. Artificial swamps have been created to offer a natural habitat for these winged wonders. You can see a wide variety of plant life in Delhi zoo.

The zoo (chidiya ghar) is strategically located in an easily accessible place. Buses are available to take you to the zoo from different points in the city. The best time to visit the zoo is between 9 AM and 4PM. Friday is a holiday. Make sure that you allot at least four hours for zoo visit. For convenience or if you are hard pressed for time, you can take a trip around the zoo in an open van.
