National Museum, New Delhi

If you are fond of heritage, culture and history, National Museum in Delhi is definitely a place to visit. One of the largest museums in the country, the National Museum consists of more than 206,000 priceless pieces of art from different parts of the world. You find exhibits that are over 5000 years old as well. National Museum was built in 1949 and is located at the intersection of Maulana Azad Road and Janpath.

The museum has special galleries allotted to Harappan Civilization, Gupta Period, Maurya dynasty, Satavahana dynasty, Gandhara art, Ikshvaku art, Tanjavur paintings and Ajanta artefacts, age old manuscripts, western art, arms, armours, musical instruments and so much more. The place is a paradise for every art lover. The exhibits are well documented and you find brief descriptions of all artefacts. You can listen to experts’ talk in the gallery.

The museum is open between 10 AM and 5 PM. Indians need to pay an admission fee of Rs. 10. For foreigners, the fee in Rs. 300 and the ticket includes an audio tour. Indians can opt for an audio tour at Rs. 100 for Hindi audio and R.s 150 for other languages. Cameras can be taken with prior permission only.

You can avail wheelchair facility from the reception in the museum. Elevators and escalators are available for convenience.
