Chhawla or Najafgarh Drain City Forest Tour, Delhi

The Chhawla or Najafgarh Drain City Forest consists of plantations near the town of Chhawla on the embankments and the Sahibi river originates from Aravali range and the confluence is at Yamuna drain. The drain city forest is trying to be revived and the untreated sewage is moved out from the drain. The Najafgarh drain or the Nullah is another name for the River Sahibi which continues its flow through Delhi, and the once famous and huge Najafgarh lake. The Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the city forest at Chawla on banks of Najafgarh drain in South-West Delhi on Saturday 28 Jun 2008.

The 12,000 saplings were planted by Ms. Dikhsit and the greenery drive has been widened over the past decades with the thick mud embankments on both its sides to channel the waters and protect Delhi from floods. The local wildlife has made a great comeback in this area and surrounding farmlands with common foxes, jackals, hares, wild cats and Nilgai along with the new city forest which got developed over a 12-hectare terrain which also belongs to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.The potential habitat by this wetland ecosystem has given many illegal bird hunters to thrive here but it is curbed by Wildlife Protection Act.

Najafgarh drain city forest is situated at Chhawla town in south-west Delhi city. This area comes in Najafgarh division. The Chhawla town is a forest area. Delhi Government also planted 12,000 different types of the trees in 2008. Now these trees make it a dense forest area. It is placed at the bank of the Najafgarh drain. So, this area has already moist mud which is very useful to plant. Government main purpose behind the made a big forest to fight pollution because Delhi city is a highly pollution city. Najafgarh drain or nallah is a part of the Yamuna River. Najafgarh also has lake (Jheel) near the town.
