Jantar Mantar Jaipur

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

The Jantar Mantar is one of the vast observatory or a Sun dial which is built by Maharaja Jai Singh and is located in the parliament street at the South Connaught Circle of New Delhi. It was built as an observatory and the other ones are located at Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura. The Delhi’s Jantar Mantar consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments which is used to compile astronomical tables and the construction is made to observe the Sun through its direct light falling on it and forming the shadow from which various astronomical and astrological predictions are made for the benefit of science and astronomy.

The four primary devices constructed here are Samrat Yantra, the Jai Prakash yantra and the Ram yantra along with Misra Yantra. A small temple dedicated to Bhairav at the east of the main site is built and it was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. It is said that the name Jantar Mantar is 200 years old and could be found mention in an account from 1803. If one sees the archives of Jaipur state the accounts from 1735 and 1737-1738 do not use the word Jantra and finally in the corrupted language it was called Jantar.

Located in the Parliament Street at Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar is an astronomical wonder of the ancient world. It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the king of Jaipur, way back in 1724 in order to revise astronomical tables on the orders on Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. The structure consists of 13 astronomical instruments or observatories that are used to compile tables and predict planetary motions.

The main yantras or instruments in Jantar Mantar are the Samrat Yantra, Ram Yantra, Jayaprakash Yantra and Mishra Yantra. Samrat Yantra is a 70 feet high triangle with a base of 114 feet and a thickness of 10 feet. It is a special sundial that does much more than just shows the time. Jayaprakash yantra is another wonder. It consists of hollowed spheres with internal cross wires that show the position of stars with respect to the earth. Mishra yantra is a brilliant invention that indicates exact time of noon in different parts of the world.

Jantar Mantar is open on all days from sunrise to sunset. There is really no point visiting the place after sunset because you cannot see how the instruments function. Admission fee for Indians is Rs. 5 and for foreigners, the fee is Rs. 100.
